Dan Savage… Daniel Savage… Daniel Keenan Savage… Does that name sound familiar to you? Unless you’re in the LGBT (lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgendered) community, watch MSNBC for his right-bashing commentary, or subscribe to his podcast, ‘Savage Love,’ that name probably doesn’t mean anything to you.
For those of you who do know him, bear with me a moment while I give a little background. Dan, or Mr. Savage, as we’ll call him for the purpose of this article, is an American author; journalist and newspaper editor, who publishes an advice column titled, ‘Savage Love’ in the Seattle based ‘The Stranger’.
This advice column, along with the Savage Love podcast, is basically toeing the LGBT line, mostly dealing with relationship issues such as the ‘Hook Up’, etiquettes involved in paying for sex, gay rights and just about anything in between. Mr. Savage is also most widely known for starting the, ‘It Gets Better Project’, an adolescent LGBT anti-bullying campaign, with his partner Terry Miller . The stated purpose of the It Gets Better Project is to, “show young LGBT people the levels of happiness, potential and positivity their lives will reach…” and to “…remind teens in the LGBT community that they are not alone and it will get better”.
Recently, Mr. Savage gave a speech to a group of California High School students about bullying, which can be viewed on YouTube with this caveat; the speech contains profane language, so be warned.
“Speech” is actually misrepresentative of what took place. What Mr. Savage delivered was more of a rant against the teachings of Scripture than the anti-bullying message he was expected to bring. He started off by listing books of the Bible that tell us that homosexuality is wrong. To his point, Scripture does indeed say that homosexuality is wrong, but he neglected to mention that Scripture also says that he KNOWS it’s wrong. Perhaps that fact was omitted as it would have tipped the listeners off to the true motive behind his vitriol.
Mr. Savage did not come to teach about bullying but to express his own displeasure with the God he knows exists for infringing on his chosen and aberrant lifestyle. Indeed in order to know that homosexuality is wrong, Mr. Savage must also know the absolute law-giver that says it’s wrong. Scripture clearly teaches that Mr. Savage knows this God: “For the wrath of God is revealed from heaven against all ungodliness and unrighteousness of men who suppress the truth in unrighteousness, because that which is known about God is evident within them; for God made it evident to them. For since the creation of the world His invisible attributes, His eternal power and divine nature, have been clearly seen, being understood through what has been made, so that they are without excuse. For even though they knew God, they did not honor Him as God or give thanks, but they became futile in their speculations, and their foolish heart was darkened.” ~ Romans 1:18-21 NAS
In order to suppress the truth, one must be in possession of it, and Mr. Savage, even in his twisted message, gives evidence of his precomittment to belief in God. In his very objection to Scripture Mr. Savage appeals to (i) knowledge, (ii) absolute truth, (iii)absolute morality, and (iv) the uniformity of nature, to name but a few, none of which can be made sense of without the God that he rejects. Don’t believe me? Let’s look at his statement, verbatim, for the first fifty-one seconds of this speech and you can judge for yourself:
“The Bible, we’ll just talk about the Bible for a second. Uh… people often point out, that they can’t help it, they can’t help with the anti-gay bullying’s, it says right there in Leviticus, it says right there in Timothy, it says right there in Romans… that being gay is, wrong. We can learn to ignore the b***s**t in the Bible, about gay people, the same way… the same way that we have learned to ignore the b***s**t in the Bible about shellfish, about slavery, about dinner, about farming, about menstruation, about virginity, about masturbation; we ignore b***s**t in the Bible about all sorts of things.“
Let’s breakdown the logic behind Mr. Savage’s comments:
Does Mr. Savage believe that…
1. Things can be known? Answer: Yes
You can’t learn to ignore things if you can’t know anything. Learning presupposes that things can be known.
2. There is Absolute truth? Answer: Yes
You can’t have a problem with the Bible calling anything wrong, if you don’t have an absolute standard of truth by which you call anything right or wrong.
3. There is Absolute Morality Answer: Yes
You can’t complain about any moral standard unless you presuppose an absolute standard by which you compare it to. As C.S. Lewis said: “A man does not call a line crooked unless he has some idea of a straight line.”
4. Nature is Uniform Answer: Yes
You wouldn’t even open your mouth to speak unless you expected the words you were about to utter meant the same things they did 5 seconds ago.
The problem with responding to a video like this is that you cannot hold the speaker’s feet to the fire. Mr. Savage’s presuppositions can be pointed out, but he cannot be asked to justify them, and that’s too bad as I suspect that then he would be the one walking out.
The title of Mr. Savage’s campaign is sadly ironic. Scripture lists homosexuality as one of many unrighteous acts which, apart from the cleansing blood of Jesus Christ, will land a person in Hell. We must pray for Mr. Savage and those like Him, that they might come to repentance for their sin against the God that they know exists, lest it be too late when they come to the realization that this life is indeed the best it’s going to get for them. If the Dan Savages of this world die unrepentant, it does not get better for them, it gets worse, much worse.
